Chrysler and Toyota say they’re trimming production even further in an attempt to reduce unsold inventory sitting on dealer lots. Toyota has announced cuts across the board from its North American plants in the United States and Canada and Chrysler says it’s halting production at five factories North America for one week.
The majority of Toyota’s cuts come from the Princeton, Indiana, plant that assembles the Sienna and Sequoia, as well as the California plant that produces the Corolla and Tacoma. Both factories will be closed for a total of more than three weeks between now and early April. Toyota will also halt production of its 4.7-liter V8 in Alabama for 16 days in March and the first week of April.
Chrysler says it’s extending closures at its Sterling Heights, Michigan (Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger), Belvidere, Illinois (Dodge Caliber and Jeep Patriot and Compass), and Toluca, Mexico (Dodge Journey and Chrysler PT Cruiser), plants for one additional week. The plants will be closed until January 26 “unless otherwise notified,” the automaker said in a news release.
Chrysler also recently announced that its Dodge Viper plant in Detroit and minivan plant in Windsor, Ontario, will be shut down until February 2.
