Toyota Mulls Prius Variants - Car News


At the launch of the 2010 Toyota Prius a couple of weeks ago—we’ll deliver our driving impressions just as soon as the embargo lifts later this month—Toyota general manager Bob Carter reiterated Toyota’s commitment to launching 10 new hybrids by 2012. Pressed a bit further, however, Carter hinted at the possibility that not all of them would be launched as new, unique vehicles or hybrid versions of existing Toyota models. They would instead take the form of Prius derivatives.

“Prius does have an iconic name, more so than the powertrain, HSD.” HSD refers to “Hybrid Synergy Drive,” a name that is found on a badge affixed to every Toyota hybrid. Carter was careful not to reveal any juicy details about any would-be partners to the Prius, which at this point, is only available as a five-door hatchback. “All that is under review,” he said.
